We told you it was coming, and now it's almost here. We're talking about the 2016 Toyota Mirai. This hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is set to revolutionize the way we see fuel.
One way to extract hydrogen is by running an electrical current through water. If this is done using solar or wind power, the process becomes renewable. Better yet, all of our hydrogen fuel can be sourced domestically.
But will hydrogen all be obtained through renewable sources like this? At the moment, much of our hydrogen does not have much of a carbon emissions benefit. While no carbon emissions are released by using hydrogen in a fuel cell, that hydrogen is often obtained by reforming natural gas-- a fossil fuel.
However, according to California law, at least one third of hydrogen used as fuel must come from renewable and domestic resources. Companies like Shell are already taking heed, and researching electrolysis powered by wind energy.
So if you are looking to change the world, you might not have much longer to wait. Until then, our inventory is filled with other fuel-reducing cars, like the Toyota Prius. Come take a test drive today!
